Cartoonito “Beepers” Main title

The Brief

BUCK developed a series of shorts for Cartoon Network’s Cartoonito block, and needed a main title for it! Raphael Arujo and I whipped up this sick animation for the logo title.

Process

This project required bringing a cel animator brain to After Effects. Using hold frames on shape layers, playful motion, creating key poses and in-betweening the in-betweens. I had a lot of fun letting the characters be playful and goofy. Offsetting the character animations made each letter fluidly animate and settle in a satisfying sequence.

I also created two alternate animation options. One was based on sound waves, since the show is a rhythm-based visualizer. Steve Day, the creative director on this title card, came up with the idea for both Alts and helped me bring the ideas into motion. While it didn’t end up being used in the final, it still encapsulates the theme of the show incredibly well. (Left)

Another Alt was to keep some of the eye and mouth elements on for a bit longer, and have them blink + go away to resolve the logo. (Right)

I had a fantastic time on this project, since it represents many of my favorite parts of motion design: character animation, playful motion, bright colors, and satisfying visuals.
